Find answers to common questions about digestive health and gastrointestinal conditions below. If you need further guidance, our team is always ready to help.

I have recently had a change in bowel habits, should I come see you?

Yes, symptoms can be a sign of something occurring in your gastrointestinal tract. I would highly recommend you coming to see me.

I have a positive national bowel cancer screening test (FOBT), what does this mean?

The national bowel cancer screening test is a tool used to attempt to pick up microscopic bleeding in your stools. If your test is positive, it has picked up traces of blood which may indicate a source of bleeding. Please arrange for a direct colonoscopy as soon as possible via our direct access form (link) or see me urgently for a consultation.

I have lots of bloating and gas, what is this caused by?

There are a variety of conditions. Although bloating and gas is usually a benign symptom, I would suggest a formal consultation to assess for other symptoms to assist with a diagnosis.

What are pancreatic cysts?

Pancreatic cysts are benign fluid filled growths in the pancreas. Depending on their type, they can grow and transform into pre-malignant cysts and/or have the risk of developing into pancreatic cancer. We have surveillance strategies to help prevent this.

What are colonic polyps?

Colonic polyps are small growths on the inner lining of the large intestine. Most are harmless, but some can develop into bowel cancer over time. They are usually removed during a colonoscopy to keep your bowel healthy and reduce future risk.

I have low iron, what does this mean?

Low iron stores can sometimes be a sign of ongoing blood loss from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This may occur from conditions such as stomach ulcers, polyps, inflammation, tumors/cancers or even small amounts of bleeding from the bowel that are not visible. Because iron deficiency can be an early indicator of hidden GI bleeding, further investigation with procedures like a gastroscopy or colonoscopy is often recommended to identify the underlying cause.
